Carnivale is an intimate rite of transition, saying farewell to the old flesh. This filmic triptych reconstructs the reflection of a monster the filmmaker once saw in the mirror, to make sense of the past while dreaming toward deviant trans futures. It explores the complexities and possibilities of self-representation through experiences of mental health, childhood fascinations with horror, and trans embodiment. Revisiting video fragments shot over the past ten years, alongside autoethnographic narration and visual poems, the film traces trans identifications with horror and the transformative potential of the monstrous. Moving between archival material, reenactment, and speculative imagination, Carnivale reclaims the abject as a site of trans becoming.
